Asymmetric Cancellation
Also called "Roach Motel." Sign-up is one click. Cancellation is four pages, six clicks, and fifteen options. Amazon's version cost them $2.5B.
The pattern, in one sentence
The product makes it easier to start paying than to stop paying.
The case
Amazon Prime sign-up: one click. Amazon Prime cancellation (the flow internally codenamed "Iliad", after the 15,693-line Homeric epic): four pages, six clicks, fifteen options, strategic "are you sure?" interruptions, multiple retention offers.
The FTC sued in 2023. The case settled September 2025 for $2.5B — $1B in civil penalty, $1.5B in consumer refunds. The largest dark-patterns enforcement in history.
Why it works (and why that's the problem)
Two cognitive biases: sunk-cost ("I've already invested time in this subscription") and default-acceptance ("the path of least resistance is to stay subscribed"). In aggregate, asymmetric cancellation extracts revenue from users who wanted to leave.
Amazon's own executives described the flow internally in terms that made the FTC complaint write itself. Courts do not take kindly to internal documents that refer to your subscription flow as a Homeric epic.
The fix
Cancellation reachable in the same or fewer steps than sign-up, through the same channel. No retention screens without a single-click skip. No required phone calls. No mandatory "reason" surveys that are actually upsells.
Where to find it
Subscription products (streaming, SaaS, meal kits, gyms). Any service where the customer lifetime value is high and the cancellation cost is low. If the number of clicks to cancel exceeds the number of clicks to sign up, the product has this pattern.
What else got hit
Amazon is the famous case. Also in the last twelve months: HelloFresh ($7.5M), Care.com ($8.5M), Adobe (pending). California's CCPA Regulations went into effect January 1, 2026 — explicitly naming dark patterns in the regulated category. The pattern is no longer a design-ethics debate. It's a settlement line item.
